Dia:Beacon
October 12, 2003
My trip to the upstate minimalist archive, the Dia:Beacon, marks my initial love and comprehension for Minimalism. To see all these grand works under one roof is outstanding. I highly recommend any New Yorker or visiter of New York to take the day trip up to the old factory to see these works, they are so clean and precise.
It was after this visit that I started thinking about visual information in terms of the physical properties of light. If you can control the elements in which light works (diffusion, reflection, refraction, etc..), then you can create information systems based off of them. Everything you see is a reaction of light that is then interpreted by your brain. Analyze what you see before your brain sticks information on to it. Are you looking at a texture? Color? Direct light or diffused light? What sort of patterns are recalled when you view certain symbols? Understanding why people view things a certain way and can react to it with an emotional response is important as a designer and needs to be constantly thought about.
After the Dia:Beacon trip I created LINE and then proceed to create CircleSquare. My works after this point tend towards Minimalism.
