Night Flowers is the 3rd in a series of art installations that manipulates pre-existing systems in Tokyo; these include Flatline and Tokyo Grafitti.
|
Construction sites in Tokyo are walled off and often have graphics depicting trees or other nature scenes. Attached to these walls are lamps that have an automatically system that turns them On at night.
For this installation the standard fluorescent tube is replaced with an ultraviolet light emitting tube. On the wall flowers are painted with invisible UV paint that. During the daytime the wall appears as normal, but when the automatic lights turn on the fluorescent tube emits ultraviolet light that causes the flowers to glow. The flowers go from invisible to visible, blooming only at night.
